FAQs
1. What is involved in getting a pilots license?
From the very first lesson you will see that flying is indeed a joy. A private pilot's license allows you the freedom to carry passengers and fly almost anytime you desire (weather permitting). At least 40 hours of total flight time is required. Of this time you will receive a minimum of 20 hours instruction and at least 10 hours of solo time.
2. How long does it take to get a license?
This can be totally up to you. We recommend at least 2 to 3 flights per week. Flights usually are scheduled for one hour. This pace keeps the information fresh, and in the long run saves you money.
3. How safe are small airplanes?
There's an old saying, "it's safer to fly than to drive". This old saying is true. Our planes are maintained to the highest safety requirements set by the Federal Aviation Administration. Trusted and licensed mechanics based here at the airport perform all required inspections.
4. How much does it cost?
Including all the instruction, aircraft rental, books, medical, and testing you can expect to spend in the neighborhood of $6500.
5. What's this about a medical?
Before you solo you will need to obtain a student pilot certificate. This is obtained by getting a required medical examination from a doctor who is an FAA- authorized aviation medical examiner. We have a list of local doctors in the office. The exam is fairly basic and most people will not have any problems. Once you get your private pilots license you will need to renew your medical every two years.
6. What is the minimum age to get a license?
You can get a license at 17 but you can solo at 16.
7. Once I have my license can I rent airplanes anywhere?
Yes, just about any airport that has a rental airplane will let you be the pilot in command after a short check ride that assures them that you know what you're doing.
8. Will my license allow me to fly any type of airplane?
No. You will be able to fly single engine airplanes only. Different airplanes may require additional training in that particular type. Retractable gear airplanes as well as tail draggers to name a few.
9. Can I just hang out at the airport before I decide to sign up?
YES! We would encourage everyone to come out to the flight school and "hang out" with the crowd. You'll meet some great people, hear an interesting story or two, and just maybe get the itch to start right then.
